Water Wars: Who Controls the Water?

DWR's Delta eNews

Delta, Flood Control to be Discussed

Jerry Cadagan's Water Clips 6/14

Senator Feinstein has an opinion piece in the SacBee in which she does the following: (1) barely attempts to hide her threat to mess with the ESA; (2) sympathizes with those who use 80% of the water while contributing 2% to the economy, while whining about contract allocations that they knew were going to happen; (3) cheerleads for raising Shasta and building Sites and Temperance;  and (4) cheerleads some more for BDCP which she says will restore the Delta. (OK, now I'll go back to being a compiler and not a critic) -

meanwhile several Northern California Congressional types apparently  have a meeting scheduled with the BDCP folks next week and in this letter to the Guv they ask some excellent questions they hope will be answered at that meeting -

Dan Bacher writes about the plans of some groups to litigate the DSC's Delta Plan and he also covers the start up of Californians for a Fair Water Policy which will oppose BDCP -

here's more of the testimony at the Met meeting in which the Met effectively raised local property taxes in order to help pay for the Peripheral Tunnels -

this Capitol Weekly story points out that Governor Brown is not winning any friends in the environmental community -

Santa Clara Valley WD budget includes $1.5 million to "support" their participation in BDCP; just wait 'til they have to pay their share of the actual damned project -

Orange County Politics blog covers the releases about the Met's tax increase and the formation of the new coalition

another transfer of NorCal water to Westlands -

for reasons that totally escape this "compiler" other compilers (who usually don't include LTEs) are giving much attention to Mike Wade's recent letter to the SacBee; Clips hopes Mike is not bothered by the numerous uncomplimentary comments some are making about his letter -

Calif. Supreme Court declines to hear case in which appellate court "dinged" the EIR relating to expanded water and sewer service for UC Santa Cruz -

Klamath area ranchers facing water cut offs go to court -

here's more for those trying to understand the current kerfuffle about water in the Klamath Basin -

an update on the plans to expand the SJ River National Wildlife Refuge near Vernalis -

if there are others who also wonder what the California Water Commission does to justify its existence, you can watch and figure it out next Wednesday (let us know if you do figure it out) -

a Senate Committee passes the bill that would move the drinking water program from Dept. of Public Health to SWRCB -

Zetland continues his push for water markets and in the process suggests that some SJ Valley Ag interests don't want to pay for water when they can get it for free -

finally, this from California Institute Capitol Hill Bulletin ---

The House Committee on Natural Resources by unanimous vote approved H.R. 1411, The California Coastal National Monument Expansion Act of 2013. (H.R. 1411) on June 12, 2013. The bill, which was introduced by freshman Rep. Jared Huffman (San Rafael) would expand the California Coastal National Monument by 1,255 acres near Mendocino, California. Specifically, the bill would include the Point Arena-Stornetta Public Lands in the California Coastal National Monument as a part of the National Landscape Conservation System. It would add 10 miles to the California Coastal Trail and includes the Garcia Estuary and two miles of the Garcia River, a critical habitat for salmon and steelhead. The land includes habitat for endangered species, and keeps the current recreational, ranching, and research uses of the land.

Jerry Cadagan's Water Clips 6/13
the Met did raise taxes as a beginning to paying for the Peripheral Tunnels, but not after getting an earful -

this coming Monday a group of fishing, environmental and farming organizations will be announcing to the media that they will be filing suit to stop the recently released Delta Plan (new Clips readers are very briefly reminded that the Delta Plan is somewhat different, but closely related to, the pending Bay Delta Conservation Plan, aka, the Peripheral Tunnels) -

this is an 1&1/2 hour Vimeo of an ACWA panel on May 9 featuring a panel of stars including Kate Poole, Mike Machado, Greg Gartrell, Jeff Kightlinger, and Jason Peltier discussing the Tunnels, using the provocative title "How Big is Big Enough" -

BDCP flak Richard Stapler (he who said Jerry Meral's remarks about not saving the Delta were taken out of context) continues to earn his pay by trying to convince us that we will learn to love Peripheral Tunnels "muck" ( thank gosh for spell check) -

speaking of paid flaks, the ubiquitous one earns his salary with this LTE in the SacBee telling us that BDCP will "help" the Delta and then referring us to the flaks at BDCP (Clips encourages all Clipsters to take this opportunity to both make a comment below Mike's letter and send your own letter to the Bee) -

the River News Herald editor does one emphasizing all the uncertainty surrounding BDCP -

the 2013 Delta Vision Report card will be released in Sacramento on June 18 -

shut-offs to some irrigators in Klamath Basin are beginning -

Jerry Cadagan's Water Clips 6/12
here is the first part of the two part series about BDCP/Peripheral Tunnels in the East Bay Express -

Jeff Michael continues his probing analysis of the BDCP documents by pointing out that they are playing a dishonest (my word) game of "moving baselines" -

Dennis Wyatt does another column in the Turlock paper comparing the fracking vote to Peripheral Canal and Tunnels and the strange political alliances -

Ed Baxter, long time radio guy at KGO in SF, asks some obvious questions about the Tunnels and finds that the answers are always the same -

Environmental Working Group says Farm Bill in Congress is bad news for California -

more on the Coleman Hatchery controversy (how many have noticed that when a Clips description simply say "more on the XYZ controversy" your compiler doesn't have a clue what it really is about) -

Since the United States Postal Service is part of the US government, wouldn’t it make sense for the government to use the USPS?  Evidently, they aren’t.  According to recent reports, 25 federal agencies have contracted with UPS from 2010 to 2013, resulting in their receiving $122 million of government business.  Fed Ex received contracts from the feds for the same time period worth $48.5 million.
